MSc in Medieval Literatures and Cultures
This MSc programme is based in the School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures. While focusing on the literatures and cultures of the European Middle Ages, is designed to be flexible and to enable pathways which either have a specifically literary focus or are broader ranging and interdisciplinary. It offers the opportunity to develop a medieval specialisation which you have already encountered in your undergraduate studies, or to branch out in new directions.
We expect that applicants will have a good honours undergraduate degree, which will have included some literary study. Some study of the middle ages is desirable but not necessarily essential.

Edinburgh has a wide range of medieval specialists, drawn from a dozen different subject areas. These scholars provide the core research training, offer option courses, and act as supervisors for your dissertation. A particular strength is in the languages and literatures of medieval Europe, from medieval French and Latin to, for example, Old Norse, Old Irish, and Middle English. Thriving medieval sections in history, Scottish studies, art history and divinity can add further dimensions to your studies.
There is an active medieval research culture in Edinburgh. The weekly seminar series in the Centre for Medieval and Renaissance Studies gives an opportunity for the university’s medievalists to hear and discuss papers by a variety of invited scholars; the postgraduate community’s own LAMPS (Late Antique and Medieval Postgraduate Study group) also runs meetings, reading groups and workshops. Besides the outstanding resources for medieval studies in the University Library, Edinburgh as capital city offers the facilities of the National Library of Scotland, the National Museums of Scotland, the National Archives, and the National Galleries.
