How to Apply

For general information about applying for postgraduate study at Edinburgh, please see the University postgraduate prospectus, which includes links to current information about fees for home, EU and overseas students.

The Application Process

All applications for postgraduate study are handled centrally by the College of Humanities and Social Science, before being passed on to the relevant member of academic staff.

Candidates need to apply online, using the link below, and applications can only be processed when they include:

  • two academic references; you can supply the University with contact details for your referees.
  • a sample of written work: preferably an academic essay of about 2000 words on a relevant topic.
  • a university transcript

We aim to give decisions about places within one month of receipt of complete applications.

Criteria for acceptance

We welcome applications from anyone with a degree in a relevant discipline, with an interest in interdisciplinary study.

We normally expect students to have received a 2.1 or equivalent in their first degree, but will consider each candidate on their merits as shown by their references and written work, and will always take special circumstances into consideration.

Deadlines

We advise applicants to submit applications as early in the academic year as possible, especially if they are seeking funding (click here for a useful PDF leaflet about funding possibilities). However, in common with most postgraduate courses at Edinburgh, we will consider applications up to the beginning of September of the relevant academic year.
